There are many forms of psychotherapy and a great deal of research on which therapies are most effective for each psychological problem. We will discuss with you which therapies you have had in the past, which helped and which did not help. Then we will discuss which therapy or therapies would be most helpful to you now. Choosing the right therapy for each patient has enabled us to help many patients who were not helped by their previous therapy. Below are some of the psychotherapies we utilize.
1. Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Therapy (often mistakenly called "Cognitive Behavior Therapy""). Cognitive Therapy uses cognitive and behavioral techniques to change the way you think about yourself, your experiences, the world, and the important people in your life.
2. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy begins by helping you determine what you value in your life. A-C-T then helps you make behavioral changes that will enable you to live according to your values and not let your psychological dysfunctions prevent you from living according to your values.
3. Dialectical Behavior Therapy begins by helping you to accept and be comfortable with the person you are. DBT then encourages you to change the person you are in ways you want to change.
4. Behavioral Activation helps you plan and engage in activities that bring you pleasure and feelings of accomplishment. For severe depression, Behavioral Activation has been found to be more effective than Cognitive Therapy, and as effective as antidepressant medication.
5. Exposure and Response Prevention encourages you to gradually experience situations you have been avoiding. ERP has been found to be extremely effective for panic attacks, phobias, and other anxiety disorders.
6. Schema Therapy helps you identify and change your dysfunctional underlying beliefs about yourself and the world. You may be unaware, or only partially aware of these dysfunctional underlying beliefs.
